Roadtrip! I’m traveling from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City this week on the BookSparks 2015 Summer Reading Challenge with this title from author Andee Reilly: Satisfaction.
About the Book: When 22-year-old Ginny Martin discovers her husband has been cheating on her, she strikes back by purchasing tickets to every concert on the Rolling Stones North American tour with their shared credit card, packing up the car, and taking to the road. As she follows the Rolling Stones from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City, Ginny experiences freedom for the first time – and begins to deal with insecurities and limiting beliefs that have kept her suburban life far too small.
Bree Cooper is a nomad, a free-spirited drifter, and a mother who abandoned responsiblity – and her young daughter. When Ginny meets Bree at a roadside diner, they impulsively make the decision to throw their lot in together. In each other, they find a friendship that they have both longed for: Bree gives Ginny a chance to have a mother figure who inspires independence and encourages confidence, while Ginny gives Bree a chance to get parenting right on the second try. Together, they find the courage to break free of the past – and to blaze new paths to happiness.
Read Satisfaction by Andee Reilly
My Book Review: This great escape book is perfect for lovers of rock music, travel, and the open road. In chapters that alternate between Ginny and Brea, this Thelma and Louise duo hit the road to escape lives that are going nowhere. I really enjoyed the opening backstories of Ginny and Bree, both stuck in a rut, and both face daunting circumstances before their journey begins. Their first meeting was random but perfect, and the evolution of their friendship and their adventure together was very enjoyable. As an added bonus, the love of music and the pursuit of the Rolling Stones, mixed with trivia about the band gave this book an alternative thread to follow as they mapped their way from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City. This thread is not a haphazard element in the story, rather, an important process toward a more self-actualized approach to life for one character. The plot twists and underlying structure of this novel was very sound. You’re in good hands with this writer.
